Solar roadways incorporated is a relatively new company based in Idaho USA, whom are producing a new panel for placing on top of roads. They hope to produce and sell these panels to governments around the world to have them placed on top of roads instead of using the petroleum based tar that roads are currently coated with.

These panels have numerous advantages in conjunction with eliminating the need for petroleum based tar, in that they’ve also incorporated photovoltaic cells within the panels. Estimates indicate that if every road in the USA were coated with these panels, the energy contributed to the grid would equal three times as much of the total USA consumption of electricity; more than enough for all vehicles to make the shift from fuel based engines to electric-powered engines. It also has the added benefit of decentralising the energy production, and linking it directly to the road system allows for more convenience for travellers.
