It has been announced that the plans for a new Super Prison is to be built in Wrexham. This is part of a project outlined by the Ministry of Justice. The prison will be “home” to 2,000 inmates and the construction is looking to star in August 2014 to be opened in 2017.
The prison is estimated to cost £212m with the contract won by the international company Lend Lease which is a considerable bonus for the Ministry of Justice who originally budgeted £250m.
Lend Lease managed to secure the contract over their rivals Interserve, Carillion and Kier. They have made a promise to invest in SME enterprises (in line with George Osborne’s recovery strategy for the United Kingdom’s economy) working with local businesses, providing apprenticeships and creating over 1000 jobs for the local area.
The planning permission has already been granted and will be built on the outskirts of the city will also contain three four storey housing blocks. This modernisation of the prison is looking to reduce prison running costs by £500m while still remaining efficient and effective for rehabilitation for anti-social behaviours.
