The rating a project receives will often be determined by the building’s insurance classification or via the loss prevention adviser. The general starting points for construction projects, such as retail, industrial, or parking structures is generally Level 2 or Level 3. If a construction project will hold high-value or sensitive stock, that rating should be increased before the specification of the door.

In the case of a residential construction, the situation will be different. The SBD (secure by design) is an initiative supported by the police that incorporates SBD standards and other planning criteria. If a construction meets those planning criteria, the construction will be required to use SBD approved products. SBD approved doors generally must comply to PAS 24.

Steel roller shutters and Sectional Doors account for the vast majority of the commercial security door market. All can be manufactured to meet LPS 1175 ratings, although there are not many suppliers who can demonstrate these ratings through third party testing certification. It is better to request the reports than accept data sheet statements. In the residential market, timber-framed and GRP Doors are the most widely used, with SBD compliance and multi-point locking doors offered by many.

Security doors are made even more complex with the introduction of electric operators. A door rated as a high security door rest on the most critical point of security where a compromise to the security of the motor or the receiver can occur. For high security situations, the highest performing gates are those with rolling code remotes and manual override locks who demand high security.

Garage doors are normally made out of aluminium, steel, PVC, GRP or timber/wood. The price of timber varies massively dependent on the species you choose. Most commonly used are larch, oak, hemlock and cedar wood. Timber is very versatile and has a huge variety of designs to suit your taste.
When you are looking for overall performance and are considering strength of door, steel is the suggested material. Selecting the sectional style door, you can have double skin panels (up to 45mm thick) which give additional strength and insulation to your door.
Aluminium is usually used for roller style garage doors and a couple of specialised sectional doors.
GRP is also very versatile, but beware of cheap sellers as these can have very little material in them, which will affect the strength and durability.
Choosing the right mechanism for your garage is incredibly important, don’t just go on style! The type of mechanism you choose (sectional, roller, canopy, side-hinged etc) should actually be decided based on the area inside and outside your garage. For example a narrow garage will have limited space near the entrance so a roller door would be best suited.
