Lifting GearLifting Gear Some sort of lifting is happening on every site. A lot of it is informal and under-considered, while the latter is planned and organized. The former depends on the person legally responsible knowing what the law demands from them and what the equipment they use is rated to do. LOLERC applies to any work equipment involving lifting, including lifting people. It states lifting equipment must be of sufficient strength and stability for the load, legibly marked to show the safe working load and be subjected to an inspection at appropriate intervals by a person who is an expert on the subject. This would require most lifting accessories for slings, chains, shackles, and hooks to be subjected to a detailed examination at an interval of no longer than 6 months. If you opt for the wrong specification, you may pay for a higher rating that your insurer did not require, or your construction will be under protected. LPS 1175, the Loss Prevention Standard, is a good place to start for any commercial specification in the UK. The rating system that this standard employs for forced-entry resistance is from 1-8. A rating of 1 means there is a basic deterrent, while a rating of 8 implies that the barrier can withstand a sustained breach from intruders using power tools. The rating a project receives will often be determined by the building’s insurance classification or via the loss prevention adviser. The general starting points for construction projects, such as retail, industrial, or parking structures is generally Level 2 or Level 3. If a construction project will hold high-value or sensitive stock, that rating should be increased before the specification of the door. Oak Boards & FlooringSolid oak flooring can be discerning to specify. Boards of a single species can be immensely different in grade, character, and performance based on their drying, processing, and finish. These differences are especially important for contractors and clients of commercial or residential projects. First, grade needs to be decided. European oak traditionally can be ideal, select, nature, and rustic. Ideal oak has unblemished grain and uniform color. Rustic has differences in grain and color. There are no grading standards, and infringements can be confusing when price comparing. When looking for oak, it is prudent to request samples rather than rely solely on grading. Deciding on board width and thickness is important. Wider boards move more in response to humidity, so a more intensive preparation is crucial. Providing a solid oak board with adequate time to undergo conditioning is important and typically requires two to four weeks, but it is more important it matches the alignment of the board with room humidity and temperature.
